Album Review

You know Adam Ficek he drummed for Babyshambles until this year (well, until he gets invited back again) and has built up a small and loyal following with his short, acoustic and occasionally brassy little vignettes, most of which are draped in a wistful 60s regalia or mid-80s feydom and theres little wrong with that.

The jaunty opening-song on this second solo set, Follow Me To Work, is about as good as it gets, just over 2 minutes of crowd-pleasing nu-folk is always a winner and were off on a roll. The next few songs are also rather engaging, even the seemingly vitriolic Shut Your Stupid Little Mouth which actually isnt quite the anarcho-punk middle-fingered kiss-off I was hoping for, rather its subtlety all the way.

Twisted Words kicks off like Motown and finishes like Canning Town, all bolshie an actually rather radio-worthy a possible single, per chance? I also like the closing Bletchley Park, partly because the whole thing is packed with drums and, what sounds like, a pump-organ. Good stuff and lots of references to your majesty etc in keeping with Roses Kings Castles, I guess.

Some of the songs are a tad forgettable but, overall, Ficek has assembled a moreish selection of acoustic-based sweetmeats that deserve more than just one taste.
