Eclectic and highly-influential US alt-rock band established in 1965 with members: Willie Alexander, John Cale, Angus Maclise, Sterling Morrison, Walter Powers, Lou Reed, Maureen Tucker and Doug Yule.
The band's key output includes the 1967 debut Velvet Underground & Nico, White Light White Heat, the self-titled third album and Loaded.
VU split in 1972 with various members, including Cale and Reed, pursuing successful solo careers.
