American jazz-vibraphonist who pioneered a unique sound using two mallets in each hand. He has been active since 1960.
His early recordings and performances were with Nashville country-musicians such as Chet Atkins, before settling on contemporary jazz with ECM, Concord and GRP and much of their artist-rosters.
He has been nominated for several Grammys, winning Best Jazz Instrumental Performance four times.
Key releases include "After The Riot At Newport" (1960), "Crystal Silence" (with Chick Corea - 1970) and "Reunion" (with Pat Metheny, Peter Erskine - 1989).
