"Club host, fashion designer, face about town, and artists' muse, Leigh Bowery transformed his body into a centrepiece of his performance art. Born in 1961 in Melbourne, Bowery moved to London in 1980, drawn to the city by the articles he read about London's punk scene and club nightlife. He quickly established a name for himself on the London club scene, concentrating on making himself into the product of his own designs, using the nightclub as his stage.
Bowery had always been out about his sexuality. He was a constant face on London's gay club scene, using his increasingly bizarre and distorted looks to challenge the conformity of dress and body image that was becoming increasingly prevalent among gay men.
Fashion Lecturer Shaun Cole explores the life and work of the outlandish performance artist. He will discuss Leigh Bowery's reasoning behind some of his most iconic looks, insight into his desire to distort his body, his bizarre obsession with pain, and why Leigh Bowery is such a Gay Icon, who still to this day influences many of the present fashionistas."
