Alt-pop outfit formed by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Matt Johnson in 1979.
Many different musicians have passed through the ranks including Johnny Marr, Zeke Manyika, Gail Ann Dorsey, Mark Feltham and Johnny Marr.
Key releases include the debut single "Controversial Subject"/"Black and White", "Uncertain Smile", "This Is The Day", "Heartland", "The Beat(en) Generation", "Slow Emotion Replay" and "I Saw The Light".
Johnson had previously courted controversy in the late '80s with the video-album "Infected" and it's politically inclined lyrics.
They released their debut album, "Soul Mining" in 1983, followed by: "Infected" (1986), "Mind Bomb" (1989), "Dusk" (1993), "Hanky Panky" (1995), "NakedSelf" (2000), "Tony" (2010 - soundtrack), "Moonbug" (2012 - soundtrack), "Hyena" (2015 - soundtrack), "Muscle" (2020 - soundtrack), plus 2024's: "Ensoulment".
The band returned to touring in 2018 for the first time in 16 years.
