Dire Straits were a multi-platinum-selling British rock band formed in London in 1977 by guitarist/ singer, Mark Knopfler, David Knopfler (rhythm guitar/ backing vocals), John Illsley (bass/ backing vocals), and Pick Withers (drums/ percussion).
Hit songs include: "Sultans of Swing", "Romeo and Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Money for Nothing", "Walk of Life", and "Calling Elvis", among others.
They released their debut album, "Dire Straits" in 1978, followed by: "Communiqué" (1979), "Making Movies" (1980), "Love over Gold" (1982), "Brothers in Arms" (1985), plus 1991's: "On Every Street".
